Keith Urban Offers Advice to Demi Lovato on Combating Addiction: 'It's All Up to Her'
Country superstar Keith Urban recently shared advice about overcoming addiction to Demi Lovato after she suffered an apparent overdose last week.
The Nashville-based singer offered Lovato support Monday while on the Australian morning show Today Extra and opened up about several things that helped him overcome his own battle with substance abuse.
"I don’t know anything about her personally,” said Urban, who struggled with addiction for years before kicking a drug habit in 2006. But said he'd tell Lovato, “Just (to have) good people around her and a willingness to want to live a different way if that’s what she wants to do. It’s all up to her.”
Urban also recounted memories of his own struggle with substance abuse.
“I didn’t seem able to stop. There was no stopping this time," he recalled. "I'd go to sleep, wake up a couple hours later, go at it again, drinking to take the edge off. I remember thinking, ‘I’m probably not going to make it until tomorrow."
Urban, who lives in Nashville with wife Nicole Kidman and their two daughters, Sunday, 10, and Faith, 7, went onto say he hated that drugs and alcohol "sucked up so much creative time," which he could have devoted to music.
Several seasons back, when Urban was a judge on American Idol, Lovato's performance of her 2015 hit “Stone Cold” brought him to his feet as he applauded her on national television.
